Microsoft App-V – End of Life: What You Need to Know and How to Prepare

Microsoft Application Virtualization (App-V) is a robust solution for application virtualisation that allows businesses to deploy and manage software applications more efficiently. By enabling them to run on end-user devices without being installed directly on those systems, App-V helps organisations reduce compatibility issues, enhance security, and streamline IT operations.

In essence, App-V intercepts and redirects all files and registry requests the application makes to a virtual copy stored in the virtual environment

As technology evolves, so do Microsoft’s solutions, and the company officially announced the End of Life (EOL) for App-V with extended support ending will be in April 2026.

With many organisations wondering about the future of their virtualised application environments. Microsoft have recently announced it has moved App-V support into a fixed extended support lifestyle phase, continuing to ship with Windows but without new features or design changes. This is for the Client and Sequencer.

The App-V Server components are still deprecated, with support ending in April 2026. However, App-V app attach allows you to use your App-V packages with Azure Virtual Desktop without needing to run your own server. There are also non-Microsoft server products that you can use with your existing App-V packages.

Microsoft encourages exploring MSIX as a modern alternative for application virtualisation, offering better security, simplified updates, and cloud integration.
